SPECIAL EVENT – LIVERPOOL BEAT POETS

    July 15 @ 11:00 am - 1:00 pm

10.30 am arrival for refreshments, 11 am start, 1 pm finish.
Classic Afternoon Tea available to book at 20% discount.

To celebrate our return to the realm of rhyme and reason, our ‘LIVERPOOL BEAT POETS’ event features a very special guest; Merseyside’s own poet and man of letters, Peter Grant.  Peter has written extensively about the dynamic music and poetry Mersey Sound when the beat poets were making a name for themselves, and will be sharing his own poems and, with ‘Mersey Poets Unplugged’, his personal memories and poems of that time.

Adrian Henri, Roger McGough and Brian Patten began their careers in poetry by giving readings in the clubs and coffee bars of 1960s Liverpool, becoming part of the success of the Liverpool music and arts scene of the era.  Their poetry was meant to be read aloud, and their audiences were young Liverpudlians, who were now finding that poetry could be equally appealing as going to a pop concert.

Peter has been described as a “Liverpool legend and a 21st century Renaissance man”, with an encyclopaedic amount of knowledge of Wirral and Liverpool acquired over the years as a Feature Writer for the Liverpool Daily Post and Echo and Wirral Globe.  In 2019, Peter won the Society of Editors’ National Award for
Weekly Newspaper Columns, with his ‘Granty’s Inferno’ Diary.  He is an accomplished poet, certainly one of the finest in the area, a supporter of the arts, a broadcaster, biographer and artist, with his first exhibition, ‘POARTRY’ at the View 2 Gallery in Liverpool, which was opened by Willy Russell in 2004.

In 2020, Peter won the prestigious ‘Creative Minds’ prize for his poem, ‘Signpost’, which will be included in his own anthology entitled ‘Goes Without Saying’, which will be published in 2021 and features a foreword by Mersey Poet Brian Patten.
