Walking on Wirral
With its unique location, there are so many ways to explore the undulating countryside, exceptional landscapes and dramatic coastline of Wirral - there are some great walks for walkers of all abilities.
Those who are new to the area, or for those who want a guided tour - try West Wirral Walks. West Wirral Walks offers guided walking packages from one hour morning strolls right through to all inclusive ‘walk & stay’ breaks. David and Paul welcome walkers of all ages and abilities including those with disabilities and use local accommodation in spectacular surroundings. West Wirral Walks specialize in walks for families and groups through beautiful Thornton Hough countryside, over flat, virtually stile free terrain.
Watersports
Wirral Peninsula is a great base for watersports, with the Dee Estuary on the west coast providing flat sandy beaches and brisk breezes for windsurfing and sailing.
The more sheltered Mersey Estuary, which forms the easterly boundary, provides the opportunity for inland sailing; and Rock Ferry is home to the Royal Mersey Yacht Club, the second oldest sailing club in the country.
The Marine Lake at West Kirby offers both flat water and high winds, providing a safe, salt-water lake for both beginners and the more experienced sailors.
Centres located around the Peninsula offer sailing, windsurfing, jet-skiing, canoeing, powerboating and rafting from bases in Hoylake, West Kirby and New Brighton.
Hoylake is home to the Wirral Sand Yacht Club, the largest club of its type in the country. The sandbanks off west Wirral, offering some 8 square miles of beach, have been used for sand-yachting for more than 70 years, and indeed hosted the European Sand Yacht Championships in 2007.
